Our first visit to Moreton Island was in February 2022. It is a beautiful spot and requires those who are taking their 4x4s to catch the Micat from the Port of Brisbane, the ferry ride is approximately 90 mins. You can access your car during the trip so you can deflate tyres on the way over and they have air pumps so you can reinflate tyres on the way home. There is a kiosk with a bar and food and drinks on the ferry.
We stayed at Castaways Moreton Island and we spent 2 nights/ 3days exploring the island. It is an interesting alternative to Fraser. Being closer to Brisbane, no dingos and being smaller allows you to see it all in less time and due to the lesser distances there is not as much pressure around tides. Having said that Fraser is larger with more things to see, more camping options, cheaper and more frequent ferry service.
There are opportunities for beautiful sunset and sunrise photography and of course swimming and water activities near the wrecks. We had lunch on one of the days at the Gutter Bar, it’s at the southern end of the island and a great spot with a great vibe. We explored the Blue Lagoon, Cape Moreton Lighthouse, North Point Lighthouse and the Champagne pools and of course spent time at the wrecks. For only 3 days it was very action packed and whilst we could’ve spent a lot more time on there, if you have only have weekend you can still have an amazing break.
